FGB Devices

How they work

Function Generating Bites (FGB) devices play a crucial role in correcting muscle dysfunctions, improper tongue resting positions, and various bite problems such as overbites, inverse overbites, open bites, and crossbites. These issues can lead to challenges in chewing, speech, and even jaw and facial pain.

FGB appliances operate by exerting a gentle force on the jaw and teeth, guiding them into the correct position. Unlike traditional devices, FGBs don't attach to specific teeth but are activated by the natural actions of biting and swallowing. They are worn overnight to allow the body to relax. Regular check-ups every 6-8 weeks ensure the treatment progresses as planned.

The device functions by blocking dysfunctions in the mouth and jaw, reducing incorrect pressure, allowing muscles to relax and align. Importantly, FGB devices are loosely inserted in the mouth, providing comfort and preventing pressure points or pain. Biting and swallowing activate the device, guiding the jaw in the desired direction.

Several FGB devices cater to specific bite problems

Bite Plates: Designed to correct overbites or inverse overbites, these oral appliances use an acrylic plate to reposition the jaw.

Twin Block Appliances: Addressing Class II malocclusions, these devices consist of two removable parts guiding the upper and lower teeth into the correct position.

Herbst Appliance: Used for Class II malocclusions, this fixed device applies constant force to reposition the jaw.

Bionator Appliance: A removable device correcting overbites, it repositions the jaw by applying pressure to the teeth.

Palatal Expanders: These fixed appliances widen the upper jaw to correct narrow palates or crossbites, but may have associated challenges.

Benefits of FGB: FGB devices, worn only at night, offer substantial benefits. They improve bite and dental alignment, reducing pain and discomfort associated with various bite problems. Custom-made for each patient, FGBs encourage proper muscle function, enhancing breathing, swallowing, and speech. By addressing the root cause, FGBs promote overall oral health, preventing conditions like malocclusion and its potential impact on dental and posture problems.
